Carlos Chamorro decided to be a teacher after a conversation with his father: “Why don't you dedicate yourself to teaching? “This way you can help anyone to be what they want to be, whether they are teachers, nurses, doctors, sweepers… they all go through school.” His father's proposal convinced him and he has been practicing for more than years, although as he says "it seems like it was yesterday." He is currently a teacher and coordinator of the Physical Education area at the Cristóbal Colón public school in Villaverde Alto, in Madrid, from where he currently promotes the Piefcitos project and its collaboration with our Educo dining room scholarship program. What do you enjoy most about your profession? Dealing with students. Seeing them improve day by day, seeing how they evolve and do things that they did not see themselves capable of doing before. The biggest challenge is to make families aware of what Physical Education really is, so that they do not confuse it with what many call gymnastics. It is not just balls and ropes, but also learning to know the body, healthy lifestyle habits, skills and abilities that improve physical capabilities, not just to run more, but to know how to do it better. What is the neighborhood where the school is like? Villaverde Alto is a working-class neighborhood, with families that have a low-medium income.
We have families of all types, families who have no problem making ends meet and also families who have more problems and others who have seen their situation aggravated by the coronavirus, because they are in ERTE or have been laid off. How are families experiencing it? The truth is that the message is one of overwhelm, of anguish. Some Cell Phone Number List mothers do not know when they are going to leave the ERTE and receive a job offer, but because they are in that situation they cannot change. They are very complicated situations in which perhaps several family members are in that situation and do not know how to support the little ones, who are the most vulnerable. If the school year is going ahead, it is thanks to the families, the students and the teaching teams. Could you imagine experiencing a crisis like this? Phew! The truth is, no. It didn't fit into any of my plans or into any of my worst nightmares. It is a situation that we have to live through, that little by little we are seeing how to improve, cope, with the use of the mask, hand hygiene, distance... I hope that the virus takes the exit door and leaves quickly so we can recover a little, even if it's something, of the life we had before.
At school, what challenges have you had to take on to support students? In the month of March, overnight, we closed the doors and had to start online classes for which we were not prepared. We had to teach the students little by little and little by little learning ourselves. Another challenge was undoubtedly the digital divide. In September we had to start from scratch, change the entry and exit protocols, the spaces, the library or the dining room, for example, have had to be transformed into classrooms. I have to say that thanks to the will of the families and the students, the change has not been as much as we expected. How do you help families who have the most difficulty making ends meet? From the school we try to facilitate as much as we can the administrative procedures to access scholarships or other aid. We have a Telegram group where we communicate when the calls go out, what paperwork needs to be done, we even help them fill them out, and we also follow up on the families that we know are most vulnerable and we give them the attention and help that we can from our position. As teachers and as an educational center we can provide them. We do everything in our power.
